Netflix’s cheapest membership tier, Basic With Ads, debuts today. The tier is priced at $6.99/month, $3.00 cheaper than its current $9.99 Basic plan. The move marks Netflix’s foray into the ad-supported space, a move it had long resisted, and comes a month before rival streamer Disney+ will introduce its own ad-supported tier.
Paramount Global plans “meaningful and sizeable” cost cuts in the coming months to balance streaming investments with declining pay-TV operations. CFO Naveen Chopra said there was the possibility of a restructuring charge landing in the fourth quarter, as Paramount wrestles with the global downturn in the ad market and turbulent global economy. Chopra and CEO Bob Bakish spoke on a conference call with analysts after the company posted weaker than expected financial results for its third quarter. Bakish noted that Paramount is dealing with “a complex environment and economic period, and in response is “taking aggressive, precise actions to gain additional efficiency across our cable networks, streaming platforms, advertising sales, marketing and global operations.”
Former CBS chief Les Moonves and Paramount Global have agreed to pay $9.75 million to resolve an investigation by the New York State Attorney General’s office. The settlement includes $7.25 from CBS and $2.5 from Moonves, confirmed in a letter on Tuesday to the judge ruling on the shareholder lawsuit in U.S. District Court in New York. Moonves was terminated after an independent investigation substantiated many of the claims of sexual misconduct .
In more Paramount news, the company stuck a multi-year distribution agreement with Virgin Media, extending the pair’s long-term partnership. Streamer Paramount+ will debut on Virgin TV in the UK in 2023. AVOD service Pluto TV will also appear on Virgin Media’s TV360 and Stream services, while networks Channel 5, MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon remain on the platform.
A new study by Spectrum/MAGNA reveals consumers favor advertising more when viewed across different platforms. The “Ad Mix Synergy: Myth or Reality?” study explored the impact of advertising when viewed across single or multiple media screens, testing combinations of linear, CTV and mobile for recall, retention, search intent and purchase intent. It found that not only does a multiscreen approach increase ad attention and retention, but also increases purchase intent. In addition, the order in which the various screens are employed also impacts ad effectiveness. Leading with linear TV on a cross-platform campaign lifted purchase intent by 25%, with streaming first and mobile hitting 14% and 4%, respectively.
NBC Universal Content Distribution and Verizon announced a new augmented reality experience on Verizon set top boxes featuring NBC’s “La Brea.” The experience, which runs through the end of the year, allows fans to interact with La Brea’s defining sinkhole to reveal classic objects from the series, including the Wilshire Boulevard Street sign and a baby rhino. Fans will be reward with an exclusive deleted scene from the series.

Truly Original set a first-look deal with comedy producers Jim Biederman (“Kids in the Hall”) and Jodi Lennon (“At Home with Amy Sedaris”). The duo will help expand the production company’s comedic slate of unscripted series for streaming and broadcast.
Game Show Network has named actor Jeff Hephner (“Power Book II: Ghost”) host of its upcoming quick-moving trivia game show, “Switch.” The half-hour series, set to premiere in 2023, features five players answering three rounds of trivia questions. The winner earns the right to play the bonus round for $10,000.
Amazon Freevee greenlit a coming-of-age drama from “Queen Sono” from creator Kagiso Lediga and Camila Soloojee; Skybound Galactic, a part of Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment; Johannesburg-based producer Diprente and Sony Pictures Television. The eight-episode series follows Ella Gardner, whose life is turned upside down when she is uprooted form her native Oakland, CA to Johannesburg, South Africa to live with her estranged father and his new family.
“The Last of Us” bows Sunday, January 15 at 9p on HBO and HBO Max. The HBO Original drama series takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed, and Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle 14-year-old Ellie out of an oppressive quarantine zone.
Mystery-of-the-week drama “Poker Face,” premieres with four episodes on Thursday, January 26 on Peacock. The series marks the television debut of Rian Johnson (“Knives Out,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”) and stars Natasha Lyonne (“Russian Doll,” “Orange Is the New Black”).
Climate documentary series “A la Vie, A la Terre” bows Wednesday, November 9 at 8:30p on TV5MONDEUSA. The program explores the most beautiful and remote locations on earth, showing viewers how climate change has impacted them.
Get ready for the holidays with “Mary Berry’s Ultimate Christmas.” The beloved British home cook and her friends a guide to creating a festive Christmas feast. The special premieres Monday, December 19 at 9p (check local listings) on PBS, PBS.org and the PBS Video app.

New documentary “Move Me” bows on PBS’s Independent Lens on Monday, November 7, following first-time filmmaker, dancer and writer Kelsey Peterson’s journey to reclaim her body after a 2912 spinal cord injury left her paralyzed at 27.
Comcast and Charter are going with Xumo as the brand name for their streaming platform joint venture, evolving the brand from a FAST service to an entire entertainment ecosystem including streaming devices, content and a platform of partners to reach audiences at scale. “Since 2011, the Xumo brand has connected with millions of customers across the country, establishing itself as a leader in the free ad-supported TV industry for the innovative ways it delivers content to its users,” said Marcien Jenckes, President, Xumo. “The new Xumo will bring industry leading streaming and aggregation technology nationwide through its expanding content, product lineup and retailer relationships.”
As the kickoff of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 rapidly approaches, Telemundo Desportes released its complete broadcast schedule for the tournament. It includes live coverage of all 64 matches beginning Sunday, November 20 at 9a with the Opening Ceremony and leading into the opening match between host country Qatar vs. Ecuador at 11a on Telemundo and Peacock.
The NBA announced that select number of NBA G League Ignite games, headlined by top 2023 NBA Draft prospect Scoot Henderson, will stream for free on the new NBA App during the 2022-2023 season. The first stream is scheduled for Friday, November 4 at 10p when Ignite start its season against the Oklahoma City Blue.
Prime Video and Overtime Elite (OTE) struck a multiyear agreement giving Prime Video exclusive global streaming rights to 20 live games per season for the next three seasons, beginning Thursday, November 4. The move makes Prime Video OTE’s first global media rights partner. In addition to broadcast rights Prime Video will exclusively stream a season-long unscripted series to debut in mid-2023.
The National Lacrosse League and TSN, Canada’s Sports Leader, revealed the schedule of the “NLL Game of the Week on TSN” broadcasts on its linear channels for the upcoming 2022-2023 regular season. The slate of 20 matchups begins with Philadelphia at Halifax on Friday, December 2 at 6p and Vancouver at Toronto on Saturday, December 3 at 5p. In addition to the game of the week broadcasts, TSN will continue to provide live streaming coverage of every game during the NLL regular season and postseason for fans across Canada on digital platforms TSN.ca and the TSN app.

The BBC is reviewing its commissioning practices in its Children’s & Education department, according to Deadline. An audit reportedly took place last month and its findings are due back shortly. The terms of the audit include whether commissioning decisions are being made that adhere to BBC public service values and looks into the relationship between Patricia Hidalgo’s department and the new BBC Studio’s Kids & Family division.
Paramount and Virgin Media struck a new multi-year distribution agreement, extending their long-term partnership across Paramount’s streaming services and linear channels in the UK. It will see Paramount+ debut on Virgin TV in 2023. Under the new deal Pluto TV, the free, ad-supported TV (FAST) service, will also gain wider UK distribution on Virgin Media’s TV360 and Stream services.
ITV Studios expanded its international scripted footprint acquiring a majority stake in multi award winning Australian production company, Lingo Pictures. Led by Helen Bowden and Jason Stephens, it will be ITV Studios first ever Australian scripted label.
