Chris Rock Doesn’t Think The Obamas Should Be Doing Production Deals With Netflix

Films ‘First Black President’ (Chris Rock as Mays Gilliam in “Head of State”) doesn’t think the real ‘First Black President’ should get a Netflix deal.

Former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama announced their multiyear production deal to produce television shows and films with Netflix earlier this year. Comedian Chris Rock has some thoughts on the Obamas’ deal. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rock believes the former president should be concerned with bigger and better things. “I don’t want to live in a world where President Obama is worried about his Rotten Tomatoes score,” he said. He later added, “I want him above that at all times. Make your money, but I don’t want [him] to be involved with that.”

The comments are a response to Barack Obama’s announcement of a production deal with Netflix. The Former President and First Lady will produce television shows and films for the streaming service over a eight year period.

Obama’s on ‘Higher Ground’

The couples latest venture, “Higher Ground Productions,” is a production company that will develop programming for Netflix, the streaming service announced. The Obamas will produce “scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries and features” that highlight issues and themes the president pursued during his eight years in office.

“One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience,” President Obama said in a statement. “That’s why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix.”

Not about Politics

The former president says he’ll never use the Netflix platform attack his successor, or fight conservative voices like Fox News. “We hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring and creative voices of the world” Barack boasts. “Netflix’s unparalleled service is a natural fit for the kinds of stories we want to share. We look forward to this exciting new partnership” Michelle added.

Barack Obama Comedy Special?

Although it’s not clear whether Rock’s comments were tongue-in-cheek, the announcement has sparked excitement from many on social media. Some conservatives, however, have vowed to cancel their Netflix subscriptions. While we at theysofunny.com aren’t privy to insider conversations, we doubt Obama will produce any comedy specials. While the first Black President has great stage presence, wit, and charm, his stand-up needs work. He’s no competition to you Chris!
