According to Deadline, the show is a semi-autobiographical comedy inspired by Emmy winner Dan Bucatinsky’s (Scandal) journey as an adoptive parent. Bucatinsky will co-write and co-executive produce with Alonzo, who will also star. The series is based on Bucatinsky’s 2012 memoir Does This Baby Make Me Look Straight?: Confessions of a Gay Dad.
She Gets It From Me tells the story of a Latina teenager, adopted by a pair of suburban gay dads, who seeks out a relationship with her birth mom (Alonzo). It is described as a look into a contemporary, blended, multiethnic, and multigenerational family.
Alonzo confirmed the project on social media Thursday (October 27). “Been a few years since I’ve done this,” she wrote on Instagram. “Waited for the right moment, time, project, and this is it. This is what I’ve been working on. It’s the first show I’m developing since #Cristela. The story is fun, the characters are real…it’s a story about family, made up by our own rules.”
