PAUL REISER will perform Saturday, Sept. 9 at Van Duzer Theatre at Cal Poly Humboldt. Comedian, actor and television writer Paul Reiser is one of Hollywood’s most prolific creatives and he shows no signs of slowing down. Reiser currently stars in the shows Stranger Things and The Kominsky Method, the latter for which he received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. The multi-faceted actor also recently revived one of his most iconic roles in the highly-anticipated return of Mad About You, the long-running 1990s comedy he co-created and starred in with Helen Hunt. Checkered Past are a ska, reggae and dub band that does classic ska/reggae covers as well as original songs. The group consists of veterans of the local Humboldt County music scene coming from bands such as Seed and Soil, Dub Propulsion Labs, Monkey and Graffiti. GEORGE LOPEZ will perform Saturday, Sept. 10 at Blue Lake Casino at 777 Casino Way in Blue Lake. Comedian and actor George Lopez can be seen in his Netflix original comedy special We’ll Do It For Half, which premiered globally over the summer. Last year Lopez was on tour nationwide for his stand-up comedy The Wall World. He also completed his tour for The Comedy Get Down, along with Eddie Griffin, D.L. Hughley, and Cedric the Entertainer. BOOK SIGNING IN ARCATA Michael Kauffmann and Justin Garwood co-edited a new work titled The Klamath Mountains: A Natural History with the help of 32 other authors. Experts in all aspects of the region’s natural history came together and are the first to tell the entire story. Kauffmann and Garwood will be signing books on Friday, Sept. 9 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Northtown Books, 957 H St. in Arcata. On Wednesday, Oct. 12, Kauffmann will be giving a presentation for the North Coast Chapter of the California Native Plant Society at 7 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge in Arcata. ART GRANTS Humboldt County artists and craftspeople are encouraged to submit grant applications for the 2022 Victor Thomas Jacoby Award, which includes $10,000 in funding for four recipients. Each fall, local artists can apply for the award — sponsored by Humboldt Area Foundation and Wild Rivers Community Foundation — by submitting examples of their work and vision for innovating and pushing their art to the next level.
