We review the HBO Max stand up comedy special Ian Lara: Romantic Comedy, which will be released on November 11, 2022.
Ian Lara is one of the hottest names in the stand-up comedy space right now. He has seen a quick rise over the last few years. It has led to him making his first special for HBO in Ian Lara: Romantic Comedy. Does he continue to knock it out of the ballpark? Let’s dive in.
While I have begun to unpack the opening of stand-up specials. You have some of the biggest stars, like Gabriel Iglesias and Kevin Hart, who go for that huge stage with some wild effects. Still, I’m often reminded of the intimacy of a comic doing a smaller room and that personal feeling you have with the audience. Right off the back, you noticed that with Ian, it’s a tight and small space, and you can hear that crowd roaring as if we are in the audience, making it slightly more personal.

Not much of a surprise. It does begin with pandemic jokes. Thankfully, Lara delivered some material with a different approach. He didn’t stay there long (which I appreciated), and from here, Lara dissects the finer things of life between eating a*s, groupon vacations, and therapy. You are probably reading that and thinking, “what an interesting combo,” and while you are right, my goodness, my guy Lara’s range is impressive. A comedian on the rise is never shy or scared of anything.
“I guess it settles the debate of whose hornier between men and women. I was willing to lose my vision for a six in Minnesota.”
One of the things I loved about Lara’s delivery is how it’s like a wind-up followed up by a big punch. He methodically tells his story in a way that brings you along for this journey, you are hooked, and boom, he hits you with a closer that has you in stitches. What makes it even funnier is how precise the punchline delivery is.
Another thing I loved about Lara was how much fun he had on stage. I’m not saying comedians that have been doing it for a long time don’t have fun. However, there is something about a comedian who is scratching his way to get to the top with more of a fun personality about their jokes. He is up there living his best life, and I love it.
Overall, Ian Lara: Romantic Comedy is one of the best joke for joke specials of 2022. It shows an eager comedian willing to tackle any type of topic to make his audience laugh. Lara is someone that will be on my radar moving forward because he had me laughing for over 40 minutes straight. This special has easily slid into my top five of the year. You don’t want to miss this one when it drops on HBO Max.
