Rajat Sood is the winner of India’s Laughter Champion. The comedian who is also known as the Pomedy King, for infusing comedy with poetry, took home the trophy and Rs 25 lakh prize money. In an exclusive chat with IndiaToday.in, Rajat Sood spoke about his journey on the show.
Excerpts from the conversation:
How would you like to sum up your journey on India’s Laughter Champion?
It was amazing and I’m thankful to the team India’s Laughter Champion, and to Sony TV. It was an enriching experience. Every day was a new experience. Many beautiful things happened throughout the journey of the show.
Were you confident of winning the show?
Main bahut zyada over-positive news insaan hoon. I was like ‘I have reached here, so I will give it my best.’ But I won’t deny that it was a tough competition. Such amazing talents that would scare you, but I was focussed on my belief. And, I always believed in giving my best and that is how I reached the finals and finally won the trophy.
Tell us how you started pomedy (poetry+comedy)?
Mujhe hamesha tukbandi ya rhyming mein interest tha. I used to rhyme and then I started poetry. When I started performing poetry, I realised that I had this natural sense of humour, which used to come out while I used to recite poems. I was told that you can’t do comedy at a poetry show. So, I did comedy where I used to add poetry, which they did not like. Then I realised that I had to make my own space where I can infuse comedy with poetry. So, that’s why I discovered this pomedy and I have been doing it for years now.
Any memorable moments from the show?
There are many moments. When I was studying in the hostel, we used to watch funny clips of films like Dhol and Dhamaal. We used to copy Rajpal Yadav and mimic him. And, then in my first episode, Rajpal sir was the guest. And, he enjoyed my performance, which was a special moment for me. During the finale, I called my parents to watch my shoot and that was the first time they watched me perform and got to know what I do. And it so happened that I won the show. So, that will always have a special place in my heart.
