Mike Epps opening entertainment venue in downtown Detroit – Crain's Detroit Business

A different type of entertainment is coming to the former Punch Bowl Social space in downtown Detroit.
Popular comedian and actor Mike Epps on Wednesday announced plans forthe 23,000-square-foot space at 1331 Broadway St. on the ground-floor of the Z parking garage. One Mike Detroit will offer comedy and musical performances, according to a news release, as well as a restaurant, lounge and podcast suite.
One Mike enters the space after food, drink and gaming venue Punch Bowl Social closed in March 2020 at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Epps — an Indianapolis native who appears in the Netflix sitcom “The Upshaws,” films including “Next Friday” and “Friday After Next” and comedy specials — is investing $3.2 million into the project, according to spokesperson TeShayla Coates.
“Detroit is a second home to Mike,” said Coates, president and CEO of Eastpointe-based marketing firm Coates Communications. “He often states he gets more love and support from Detroiters than from his own hometown.”
Epps is partnering on the project with the Rev. Horace Sheffield III, who leads New Destiny Christian Fellowship on the city’s west side. Sheffield III is 50 percent owner and managing partner, Coates said. The Detroit pastor made a substantial, undisclosed investment into the business, she said. The men got acquainted during Detroit Association of Black Organization events.
Operating the business are metro Detroiters Robert Schultz, Kimberly I. Moore and Rhashad Hicks.
The announcement comes after another group used the vacated Bedrock Detroit property for a high-end tailgating venue. Indianapolis-based Bullseye Event Group had a short-term lease during the 2021 NFL season, Bedrock Senior Communications Associate Sam West told Crain’s.
The opening of One Mike — a countdown clock on its website points to April 7 — will bring 100 new jobs to the city, according to Coates. The showroom, where stand-up comedy and musical performances will take place, will seat 300 guests. Epps, who has performed in Detroit dozens of times over the past two decades, will be a featured performer at One Mike.
“Detroit has always been a great city for comedy and a second home to me,” Epps said in a statement. “I’m excited to announce the flagship location for the One Mike brand in Downtown Detroit. We’re bringing superb dining and premier comedy experiences to 1331 Broadway.”
Inside, Savor 42 restaurant will offer seafood, lamb, beef, chicken and vegan options, according to the release. the second-floor The Luxe Lounge will feature all Black-owned wine and spirit brands, including Epps’ newly-launched Eppic Spirits.
Along with entertainment, food and drinks, One Mike Detroit will include a social justice aspect, according to Coates.
One Mike will offer two outreach programs: one aimed at teaching conflict resolution skills to troubled youth, and another that will look at issues facing metro Detroit residents through digital promotions and fundraising to support local, to-be-named organizations.
Sheffield III, father of Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield, in a statement called the venture great for his family legacy.
“In 1919 Horace Sr. and Georgia Sheffield, my grandparents, fled Georgia with their 3-year-old son, Horace L. Sheffield Jr. for a better life in Detroit,” Sheffield III said. “Since then, through my grandparents, my parents, and now my daughter, my family has lent its time and talent to every imaginable way to make things better for others. Today, through One Mike, the Sheffield family carries that family engagement forward in a new way.”
