Guess who is back? Me, your favorite stand-up comedy reviewer. I love seeing the number of stand-up specials released in September.
I frequently talk about the comedian needing to reel the audience in, especially in the days of a short attention span. With so much content to consume, you can’t help but notice people are ready to pull the trigger and press go back in the middle of anything that isn’t keeping their interest.
So when Sheng Wang comes out, his delivery is a little dry, slightly monotone, and the first few jokes are just okay. You smirk, smile, or a slight chuckle, but nothing hits a home run out of the gate. Now, I am just talking, pure reeling the viewer within that first five minutes, not his entire body of work. I am not sure Wang will do that to anyone that doesn’t already know his work.

One thing I liked about the special was the relatability factor of Wang’s jokes. He touches on subjects we deal with daily, from switching from boxers to briefs to how we sleep to taking his girlfriend to a mammogram. In the joke about the mammogram, he said it looked like the doctor was making Tittie Paninis, and I laughed my a*s off. I will be using the phrase for the rest of my life.
I mentioned early about Wang not really reeling in the viewer at home. However, I will say that it is worth sticking around throughout the entire special. Something about the way he delivers these jokes makes them funny, and I can’t even explain it. He doesn’t have facial expressions, loud voices, or anything. Instead, he has a humorous tone that makes these jokes hilarious.
Another thing that stood out from Wang’s special was his storytelling. He can set the joke up perfectly in how he starts the jokes, takes us on this journey, and delivers that final punchline that makes us laugh. It is not easy being a storyteller as a comedian because sometimes you get lost within the story, and the punchline misses, but Wang delivers.
Overall, Wang’s special is filled with jokes that land and some that don’t, which is perfectly fine as the jokes that land are excellent. I loved the relatable jokes because you feel a part of the special, and because of that, I think you should check out this special.
