Untold: “Operation Flagrant Foul”
Netflix

In the summer of 2007, news broke that an NBA referee was being investigated for gambling on his own games, igniting a media storm and sending the NBA, FBI and sports fans into crisis. That referee was Tim Donaghy, and the story didn’t just start and end with him, but wound its way from the small-town bookies of the Philadelphia suburbs to notorious New York crime families and the worldwide sports gambling underworld. For the first time, all three co-conspirators discuss their involvement and, unsurprisingly, their stories don’t all line up.
Summer Under the Stars: Jack Carson
TCM, beginning at 6am
Catch a Classic!

John Elmer Carson is known better by his screen name of Jack Carson. But he is probably even more recognizable by his familiar face, which was frequently seen in movies throughout the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s, following his earlier successes in vaudeville and on radio. Carson turned up in many, usually supporting, roles on the big screen during that time, often playing a comedic friend, though he did appear in dramas and musicals, as well. During the ’50s, Carson also set his sights toward yet another medium, television, and became a frequent presence on the small screen in the years prior to his untimely death at age 52 in 1963. The popular and prolific character actor makes his debut in Turner Classic Movies’ Summer Under the Stars today, with 14 films from his heyday on the big screen — largely comedies, but with some dramas mixed in. The lineup begins with Gentleman Jim (1942), Raoul Walsh’s biopic of boxer James J. Corbett, played by Errol Flynn. Other highlights today include a couple of the comedies in which Carson appeared with Dennis Morgan: Two Guys From Milwaukee (1946) and Two Guys From Texas (1948); three musical comedies also featuring Doris Day: Romance on the High Seas (1948), It’s a Great Feeling (1949) and My Dream Is Yours (1949); and more.

Catch a Classic!

Turner Classic Movies’ annual Summer Under the Stars monthlong programming event closes out another year today with 12 films starring legendary British actor Richard Henry Sellers, better known as Peter Sellers. Most of the titles feature Sellers in the comedic roles for which he is most remembered, but there are also some dramas that demonstrate his range. One of his later comedies, on which Sellers was an uncredited director and features him playing two roles, is making its TCM premiere: The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu (1980), which was released less than a month after the actor’s passing. Also today is a much more iconic film that had Sellers taking on three roles and earning a Best Actor Oscar nomination in the process — Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 classic dark satire Dr. Strangelove. Sellers’ second Best Actor Oscar-nominated performance can also be seen today, in the 1979 satire Being There. Other highlights: The Mouse That Roared (1959), another satire with Sellers in three roles; the counterculture-themed romantic comedy I Love You, Alice B. Catch a Classic!

Humphrey Bogart, one of the greatest male movie stars of Hollywood’s classic age and whose legendary performances endure and continue to entertain modern audiences, is Turner Classic Movies’ Star of the Month in September. Each Thursday night (and usually well into the following day), the network will spotlight some of Bogie’s most memorable films grouped according to a particular theme. Tonight’s lineup highlights movies featuring Bogart’s collaborations with two people with whom he had his most impactful personal and professional relationships: writer/director John Huston and actress Lauren Bacall. Up first, enjoy Bogie leading five productions directed by Huston: The African Queen (1951), which won Bogart a Best Actor Oscar, and earned a Best Director nomination for Huston, along with a nod for the screenplay he cowrote with James Agee, and a Best Actress nomination for costar Katharine Hepburn; The Maltese Falcon (1941), the iconic film noir with Bogart as private investigator Sam Spade, featuring Huston’s Oscar-nominated screenplay adaptation of Dashiell Hammett’s novel; the wartime spy film Across the Pacific (1942); the Best Picture Oscar-nominated The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948), which earned Huston Academy Awards for directing and his screenplay; and the 1948 film noir Key Largo. That last film was the final onscreen pairing of Bogie and Bacall, which segues nicely into airings of the other three movies that the iconic Hollywood couple made together: To Have and Have Not (1944), their first big-screen collaboration and the production on which they began their famed romance, which was also Bacall’s overall feature film debut and includes her famous “just whistle” quote; The Big Sleep (1946), with Bogie playing his other famous film noir detective, Philip Marlowe; and the 1947 mystery thriller Dark Passage. — Jeff Pfeiffer

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power
Prime Video, 9pm
New Series!

Amazon has a lot riding on this epic fantasy series that brings us back to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. The drama has been in development/production and buzzed-about online for nearly five years and is reportedly the most expensive TV series ever made — the first eight-episode season alone is estimated to have cost over $450 million to produce, and the company’s five-season production commitment to the series is thought to be worth at least $1 billion. Rings of Power takes place thousands of years before The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, and is largely based off the appendices Tolkien included in LOTR that chronicled some of Middle-earth’s history. It covers major events of the fictional realm’s Second Age that led to all the later drama, including the forging of the Rings of Power, the last alliance between elves and men, and the rise of LOTR’s infamous “big bad,” the dark lord Sauron (who, based on glimpses in an early trailer for the series, will be seen in an earlier, but still creepy, form prior to his manifestation as an all-seeing Eye). Some of the other characters included here will also be recognizable to viewers even if they have only seen Peter Jackson’s popular LOTR movies, such as the long-lived elves Elrond (Robert Aramayo) and Galadriel (Morfydd Clark). The series’ first two episodes drop this evening on a special night. The remaining six episodes of the first season will be available Fridays at 12am ET (early morning) beginning Sept. 9. — Jeff Pfeiffer

A Face in the Crowd
MOVIES!, 2:30pm
Catch a Classic!

Andy Griffith gives an extraordinary performance as Larry “Lonesome” Rhodes, the lead character of this 1957 Elia Kazan-directed drama that marked Griffith’s screen debut. Although Rhodes is a Southern character like Griffith’s kindly and beloved Sheriff Andy Taylor from the actor’s later classic sitcom The Andy Griffith Show, this man’s charming accent and folksy “aw-shucks” persona is not the genuine article, and instead hides a cruel, ambitious and egomaniacal personality that only grows as the one-time drunken drifter finds himself — thanks to the radio journalist (Patricia Neal) who discovers him (and later regrets the monster she created) — rising as a nationally renowned media personality and political demagogue. If you only know Griffith from his sitcom, check out his dynamic acting range here as Rhodes, a role that helped the actor become a star and really should have earned him an Oscar nomination. Besides being ignored by the Academy, A Face in the Crowd also had mixed reviews on its original release, and wasn’t overly successful at the box office. But time has looked kindly on the film, which was selected for preservation in the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry in 2008, thanks not only to Griffith’s performance but also the story’s look at the volatile intersection of media, celebrity and politics that appears ever more prescient with each passing year.
